Introducing Murray Powell

Murray Powell is a singer, songwriter, and performer who plays both rhythm and bass guitar. His lifelong connection to music began at the age of twelve, inspired by his parents, who were both musicians. Over the years, he explored several instruments, including piano, accordion, trumpet, and trombone, before eventually focusing on guitar and songwriting.

Although music was set aside for part of his working life, Murray returned to performing in the early 2000s when he began taking guitar lessons and reconnecting with his passion for live music.
For nearly two decades, Murray has been performing publicly throughout the Toronto area. In 2009, he formed the band Prowler and the Wildman (“PWM”) with a group of friends. The band featured mandolin, lead guitar, drums, and Murray on rhythm guitar and vocals.

Over the years, Murray has participated in numerous open mics, jam sessions, and music festivals across Toronto, building connections with fellow musicians and audiences alike through his heartfelt performances and original material.

In June 2011, Murray recorded and released his first CD of original music, Remedios, featuring 13 original songs. The album was dedicated to the memory of his daughter, Leslie Marie Kelly, who tragically passed away in 2008 at the age of 26. One of the songs on the album was written especially in her honour. Murray’s music often reflects personal experiences, along with his thoughts on life, love, loss, and human connection.
Murray also created music inspired by poetry written by Leslie, including a moving tribute shared on the anniversary of her passing.

Leslie’s Poem for a Friend

“I cannot ease your aching heart, nor take your pain away;

But let me stay and take your hand and walk with you today.

I’ll listen when you need to talk, I’ll wipe away your tears;

I’ll share your worries when they come, I’ll help you face your fears.

I’m here and I will stand by you, on each hill you have to climb;

So take my hand, let’s face the world and live just one day at a time.

You’re not alone, for I’m still here, I’ll go that extra mile;

And when your grief is easier, I’ll help you learn to smile!”
