Introducing Murray Powell
I am a singer, songwriter and performer, and I play rhythm and bass guitar. I have been involved in music since the age of twelve, as my parents were both musicians, and I experimented with piano, accordion, trumpet and trombone.
For a period during my working life, I set music aside, but more recently I started playing again and took guitar lessons in the early 2000s. Over the past nine years, I returned to singing publicly, and in 2009 I formed a group with some friends called ‘Prowler and the Wildman’ (AKA “PWM”), comprising a mandolin, lead guitar, drums, and myself.
Over the past four years, I have participated in a weekly jam with a group of other musicians where I have had the occasion to try out many new songs and share good times. I also had the opportunity to perform at music festivals held annually in different parts of Toronto.
In June, 2011, I recorded and released my first CD of original songs called “Remedios” comprising 13 of my own compositions. This CD is dedicated to the memory of my daughter Leslie Marie Kelly, who was killed in 2008 at the age of 26, and there is a special song for her on this album. My songs cover personal experiences and events, and my thoughts and feelings about life, love and people.
Here is a song I recently created from a poem written by my daughter (Leslie Marie Kelly), and it is being shared on the 8th anniversary of her death.
Leslie’s Poem for a Friend
| “I cannot ease your aching heart, nor take your pain away;
But let me stay and take your hand and walk with you today. I’ll listen when you need to talk, I’ll wipe away your tears; I’ll share your worries when they come, I’ll help you face your fears. I’m here and I will stand by you, on each hill you have to climb; So take my hand, let’s face the world and live just one day at a time. You’re not alone, for I’m still here, I’ll go that extra mile; And when your grief is easier, I’ll help you learn to smile!” |
I am looking forward to more opportunities to play, either independently or with my group, and to promoting my CD, while welcoming any and all referrals that come my way. I am also open to participating in interviews and or discussing my material upon request. Please feel free to contact me.
